Steinn Sigurðsson-Kaos Coffee Table

At Design Interviews

(Excerpt) Interview with Steinn Sigurðsson : Frank Scott: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?. Steinn Sigurðsson : My intention was to create a table that could be looked at as a freestanding sculpture but is still a fully functional table for TV lounges or a sofa table. This table should have a convenient hight (42 cm) and with a shelf for magazines and remote controls and not be a regular square shape, but rather abstract pattern shape with multyform which makes it look smaller than it actually is (136 cm). That way it looks compact and is easy to go around, for instance where space is limited. My second challenge was to use novelty assembly and in this case the table is held together with only two circular nuts and two rod-legs making the assembly time only about three minutes. .Frank Scott: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?. Steinn Sigurðsson : Recently sofa tables have become lower and lower from the floor, some only 15-20 cm high - and I find this trend unacceptible where the usage is very limited. I feel that a table should be at least 40 cm heigh but it is a challenge to make it trendy even if it is 42 cm heigh and 136 cm in length. The challenge is to let it look compact although the table is rather big. I tried to adopt a sculpture form to the Kaos table and that way made it completely different from the traditional tables. .Frank Scott: What are your future plans for this award winning design?. Steinn Sigurðsson : I am interested in finding a production and sale channel in Europe. .Frank Scott: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?. Steinn Sigurðsson : Few days, may be a week. .Frank Scott: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?. Steinn Sigurðsson : The idea came up when a friend needed a TV lounge table, but in a space that was limited. .Frank Scott: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?. Steinn Sigurðsson : I am looking for a producer and sale channel. .Frank Scott: What made you design this particular type of work?. Steinn Sigurðsson : To make a table that had something new and fresh and was completely original .Frank Scott: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?. Steinn Sigurðsson : No, all my work is original .Frank Scott: Who is the target customer for his design?. Steinn Sigurðsson : Consumers that appreciate modern furnitures .Frank Scott: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?. Steinn Sigurðsson : There are many tables in the world but I think I can claim that the concept of the Kaos table is very original and just mine. .Frank Scott: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?. Steinn Sigurðsson : Kaos is the name of this table and frankly I think it can stand up to the name Kaos - because of all the different shapes and surprise elements in one table. .Frank Scott: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?. Steinn Sigurðsson : I use big sheets of paper and different kinds of pensils and led sticks to improvise my thoughts. .Frank Scott: What is the most unique aspect of your design?. Steinn Sigurðsson : Form and function. The Kaos table can be looked at as a free standing sculpture but is fully functional, and that is what makes my design unique .Frank Scott: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?. Steinn Sigurðsson : I am in close contat with skilled prototyype maker and we discuss production apportunitie and cost. .Frank Scott: What is the role of technology in this particular design?. Steinn Sigurðsson : A new water cut technique was used to cut out the different shapes of the table. .Frank Scott: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?. Steinn Sigurðsson : I stay very much in touch with the new trends in what is going on and sometimes I find inspiration in sporting goods such as boots and shoes .Frank Scott: What a.[ End of Excerpt: Read complete interview with Steinn Sigurðsson on Kaos Coffee Table at design-interviews.com ]
